FormulaZero puts a hybrid-era open-wheel car on an Italian circuit and gives you one uncomplicated objective: find a quicker lap. The browser game moves between a close chase camera and a detailed cockpit view, with speed, sectors, energy deployment, lap delta, and other telemetry packed around the steering wheel. Keyboard controls work, but Dimi Panagiotopoulos recommends a controller, and there is now a more unusual option: pair your phone and tilt it like a steering wheel. Your best attempt goes onto a global leaderboard, where strangers will promptly demonstrate that your supposedly tidy lap was not tidy at all.
Panagiotopoulos previously worked in software and controls at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, which gives the project a stronger engineering premise than the average weekend racer. FormulaZero runs through Three.js r187 and WebGL 2, filling a full-viewport canvas with the car, circuit, crowds, foliage, shadows, cockpit instrumentation, and racing HUD. The game’s own materials describe real-time vehicle physics and hybrid-energy strategy, while its interface exposes gearing, active aero, racing-line guidance, graphics controls, replays, and lap validation. It is a proper browser time trial rather than a car model with arrow keys attached, complete with enough setup and feedback to make shaving off half a second feel like serious work.
